Geboren als Emanuel (Man) Rudnitzky (Ray); 1909-13 Studium Malerei in New York, 1913-19 als Maler und Werbegraphiker selbständig; 1917 Mitbegründer von New York Dada, ab 1920 in Paris, 1923 erster Film; nach 1925 wichtiger Mode- und Werbe-Photograph, Zusammenarbeit mit allen Surrealisten,1940-50 in Hollywood, danach wieder in Paris
