Ausbildung als Konzertpianist, erste fotogr. Aufnahmen im Yosemite Valley um 1916; 1927 erste Publikation, 1932 Gründungsmitglied von f:64, 1941-43 im Office of War Information, 1946 Gründer des Department of Photography an der California School of Fine Arts, ab 1955 eigene Workshops.
